Promoting AI! Trump: Will urgently approve power plants to ensure AI power supply
Trump announced at the Davos World Economic Forum that he will expedite the approval of new power plants through an emergency declaration to meet the surge in electricity demand from artificial intelligence data centers in the coming years. These power plants can use any fuel, including coal, and do not need to comply with climate goals. He hopes the power plants will connect directly to the data centers, avoiding reliance on outdated power grids. In addition, Trump also announced partnerships with OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank to invest in AI infrastructure
To accelerate the development of AI, Trump stated that he would "fast-track" the approval of new power plants to meet the electricity demands of data centers.
On January 23rd, local time, U.S. President Trump announced during a video speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he would expedite the construction of AI power plants through an emergency declaration.
Trump stated:
"We will build power generation facilities. I will get approval through an emergency declaration. I can complete the approval myself without waiting for years."
Trump emphasized that these power plants could use any fuel, including coal, and clearly indicated that his administration would not require the AI industry to adhere to any climate goals. He also suggested that coal be used as an emergency backup power source.
The electricity demand for AI data centers is expected to surge in the coming years. While tech companies primarily focus on procuring renewable energy to meet climate goals, analysts believe that natural gas will play a key role in powering AI due to its abundant supply, reliability compared to renewable energy, and faster deployment than nuclear energy.
Trump expressed his desire for power plants to be directly connected to data centers rather than powered through the grid:
You don't need to connect to an old grid that might be cut off.
On his first day in office, Trump declared a national energy emergency, instructing federal agencies to use any emergency powers at their disposal to expedite energy infrastructure projects. The next day, Trump announced a partnership with OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank to invest billions of dollars in AI infrastructure through a project called Stargate.
