Anthropic releases Claude security tool, cybersecurity stocks plummet

Anthropic's launch of an AI code scanning tool raises industry concerns, cybersecurity stocks plummet collectively.

On February 20, Anthropic PBC released new security features for its Claude AI model, which can scan codebases for security vulnerabilities and provide targeted software patch recommendations for manual review. The tool is currently in a limited research preview phase.

The news triggered a collective sell-off in the cybersecurity sector, with the Global X Cybersecurity ETF falling 4.9%, closing at its lowest point since November 2023.

Cybersecurity stocks SailPoint plummeted 9.4%, Okta fell 9.18%, and Cloudflare dropped 8%.

Since the beginning of this year, the iShares Technology Software Sector ETF has declined by over 23%, on track for its largest quarterly drop since the 2008 financial crisis.

Investors are increasingly concerned that AI tools enabling users to create applications themselves will weaken demand for traditional software products, thereby impacting companies' growth, profit margins, and pricing power.
