Seventeen-year-old senior Noh Jun-sik has already received an offer from Samsung. According to The Korea Herald, the average annual salary for Samsung Electronics employees last year was KRW 158 million (approximately USD 107,300). Even more attractive is the fact that, under Samsung's latest union labor agreement, employees in its semiconductor division (including assembly line operators) could receive bonuses of up to USD 400,000 (approximately RMB 2.7 million) next year if profit targets are achieved. Currently, one-fifth of semiconductor workers in the US do not hold university degrees, yet the average annual salary in the industry reached approximately USD 170,000 in 2020.
Faced with this talent gap, global giants are investing heavily in skills training. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon pointed out that major industrial projects such as shipbuilding will urgently need 300,000 electricians and welders over the next five to ten years, and announced a USD 24 million investment to support submarine manufacturing and employee training.
