NVIDIA is shifting its AI moat from chip technology to capital advantages. In the face of competitors encroaching, NVIDIA is leveraging its strong cash flow and balance sheet by providing $105 billion in funding support to OpenAI and seeking $500 billion in financing to boost the expansion of the AI industry, ensuring continued market dominance and avoiding business slowdown

NVIDIA has become the world's most valuable chip company thanks to its significant first-mover advantage in the field of artificial intelligence. Now, nearly four years into the generative AI boom, competitors like Advanced Micro Devices and Google are gradually eroding NVIDIA's technological lead, prompting the company to leverage another core advantage: capital.

After reaching an agreement with Wall Street firms last week to seek $500 billion in financing for NVIDIA's graphics processors, the company announced on Monday that it would provide up to $105 billion in funding support for OpenAI's large data center located in Ohio. This funding serves as a sort of safety net in case the ChatGPT developer encounters operational difficulties.

For NVIDIA, this strategy is about pushing the AI industry expansion at all costs. It understands that the demand for critical computing infrastructure is nearly endless, but the majority of procurement is concentrated among a few large-scale cloud providers. Over the past three years, NVIDIA's quarterly free cash flow has grown 18 times, reaching $48.5 billion in the latest period. With a strong balance sheet and credit rating, NVIDIA aims to avoid a significant slowdown in business after experiencing revenue growth exceeding 55% for 12 consecutive quarters.

Ram Bala, an associate professor of artificial intelligence and analytics at Santa Clara University's Leavey School of Business, stated, "NVIDIA still holds a dominant position, but they are highly vigilant about not losing market ground."
