
The Taiwan dollar is up 9.7% so far in May at NT$29.4602 to US$1 early Tuesday (5/6) and up 12.9% since April 1 (NT$33.2464), with the recent surge after a rumor that US President Trump wanted to see it appreciate to NT$13.3 to US$1 as part of tariff negotiations, media report. Recent media reports call the rumor “absurd” and Taiwan’s central bank issued a statement (5/1) saying “the US Treasury has not demanded the appreciation of the New Taiwan dollar” and called the notion of a specific price target, “baseless”. 1/2
