Trump personally named him! The new BLS commissioner takes office, is today's non-farm payroll going to "rewrite history"?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the latest employment data on Wednesday. The bureau has been without a Senate-confirmed commissioner since President Trump fired its former head. Previously, the employment data released by the agency was disappointing.
But at the end of last month, Mr. Trump said he would nominate little-known government economist Brett Matsumoto to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Mr. Matsumoto is the second person President Trump has nominated to lead the bureau, which is responsible for releasing data on the labor market, inflation, and other areas. In August of this year, President Trump announced he would appoint conservative economist E.J. Anthony to the post, but he withdrew the nomination after bipartisan criticism.
Mr. Matsumoto is unlikely to face the same strong opposition. He is little known outside the small circle of statistical experts but is quite well-known within it, partly because he was previously active on social media, writing articles explaining the nuances of statistical data. This is in stark contrast to Mr. Anthony, who was criticized for his social media posts often being accused of distorting economic statistics to support partisan positions.
Mr. Matsumoto did not respond to a request for comment.
Mr. Trump announced the nomination in a post on Truth Social, in which he again attacked the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The president said the bureau has been led by "weak and stupid people" so far and has produced "very inaccurate data."
Mr. Matsumoto's nomination still needs Senate confirmation. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of North Carolina in 2015 and has since worked at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most recently on research related to inflation measurement. For the past year, he has been assigned to the Council of Economic Advisers, a fairly common practice for government economists.$JPMorgan Chase(JPM.US) $NVIDIA(NVDA.US) $Invesco QQQ Trust(QQQ.US)
