In consumer marketing, there is a concept called “renting share” with which every assistant product manager is familiar. When a company puts a temporary price promotion on a product (e.g. potato chips, sneakers, furniture), the company will see an increase in purchases pulled forward from future periods as would-be consumers try to lock in the temporary discounted price. When the current and future periods are netted together, one tends to see no change in sales unless there is a permanent change in perception of the product.
