Elon has gone a bit too far this time, which has also increased the regulatory efforts of NHTSA.
Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature is now under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for all Tesla vehicles equipped with this function following a fatal accident. This incident has raised questions about the system's ability to handle low-visibility conditions.
While reviewing Tesla's accident reports, NHTSA discovered multiple collision incidents related to low-visibility conditions, including one fatal pedestrian accident and another with injuries. This prompted NHTSA to initiate a preliminary evaluation of Tesla's FSD, covering all Tesla vehicles produced since 2016. The evaluation focuses on the system's detection and response capabilities in reduced road visibility, whether there are other similar incidents and their causes, as well as the impact of Tesla's FSD system updates on performance.
Although ODI's preliminary evaluation is just the first step toward a recall, Tesla has gone through this process multiple times. Let's wait and see what the final outcome will be.
