Fire safety concerns draw attention

BMW recalls nearly 700,000 vehicles in China due to defective coolant pumps, dealing another blow to the already troubled automaker. China's State Administration for Market Regulation announced that starting March 1, 2025, BMW will recall 499,539 domestically produced vehicles and 188,371 imported vehicles. The reason is faulty coolant pump plugs installed in certain models, which may lead to corrosion or rust causing short circuits, and in extreme cases, even fires. Affected models include domestically produced 3 Series and 5 Series cars as well as some imported X Series crossovers.

This recall comes after BMW's sharp decline in deliveries in China. In the third quarter, shipments of BMW and Mini brand vehicles in China fell by 30%, the largest drop in over four years. Previously in September, BMW recalled 1.5 million vehicles globally due to defective brake systems supplied by Continental AG and issued a profit warning, with repairs expected to cost nearly 1 billion euros. A BMW spokesperson said the defect was discovered in August and alerted Chinese authorities, but could not immediately explain why the recall won't begin until March next year.
