SpaceX OptionAccording to the Financial Times, Apple is considering purchasing memory chips from a Chinese company that has been blacklisted.
Reportedly, Apple is lobbying the Trump administration to approve its purchase of memory chips from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT).
It is reported that Apple contacted the U.S. Department of Commerce over a month ago.
CXMT was placed on the Pentagon's blacklist for alleged ties to the Chinese military.
Apple currently buys memory chips from Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix; adding CXMT could lower costs and diversify its supply chain.
Apple recently raised the prices of some iPads and MacBooks, saying it could no longer absorb the rising costs of storage and memory.
This price hike triggered Apple's second-largest single-day stock sell-off on record, wiping out $263 billion in market value.
Any approval is likely to face political scrutiny due to national security concerns surrounding Chinese chipmakers.
